Unwinnable quagmire

Harvey at IMAO tells us the war is lost, and it's time to withdraw... from California.

After the all of endless days of the California fire quagmire, it's time for America to admit that it can't win this battle. We must immediately withdraw our forces and go home. But until our so-called "leaders" in Washington wise up to the folly of their current course, all we can do is ask ourselves, "why does fire hate us?".

The roots go deep.

Like a good progressive, Harvey examines the history, the root causes, and of course reminds us to first "Think of the children!"

The solution is clear:

I believe in co-existence. I think we can get along peaceably with fire if we just set our pride aside and give it some of what it wants.

After all, it's not called "the combustion of peace" for nothing.

Hilarious!

It started with funny cat pictures and funny quips in quasi-Leetspeak. Now, the lolcatz phenomenon has spread... to the Bible! For the first time, the Bible will be translated to lolcat speak.

Some people have to much time on their hands.

The lolcatz have even spread to the Actuarial Outpost, popping up frequently in the Mafia game forum.

A new definition of "working class"

Don Surber has the story of a family, who made use of SCHIP for their children, and subsequently had their son speak for the Democrats. The newspapers didn't do any investigating, but bloggers did. The family lives in a 3,000 square foot house in a nice neighborhood, owns their own business, and sends their children to private school.

Apparently, this family will pay for private school, but not private health insurance.

This family exemplifies the very real Republican fear with expanding these types of programs. As I understand it, the recently vetoed plan would allow a family currently paying for their children's health insurance to immediately drop it and have the government pay. Meanwhile, some people who need the coverage more than this family will remain uncovered.

Hopefully, the veto will spur compromise. You know, bipartisan does not mean "doing what Democrats demand."

The 80's are back

At least in music. It seems you can't listen to the radio without hearing an 80's track lovingly stolen (I mean, sampled).

Rihanna followed the smash S.O.S. (incorporating the synth blips of Soft Cell's Tainted Love) with Shut Up and Drive (New Order's Blue Monday), both of which did better than the sampled songs. Timbaland's The Way I Are uses the melody of Salt-N-Pepa's Push It. And I'm sure there are more I'm mising.

That's not to say that other decades avoid the touch of the sampler, from the 50's (Sean Kingston's Beautiful Girls with Ben E. King's Stand By Me) to this decade (Kanye West's Stronger with Daft Punk's Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger).

The case of S.O.S. reflects a problem with the way music is credited. Tainted Love writer Ed Cobb has songwriting credits for the original song and the Soft Cell version, and was credited for S.O.S. However, the part of the song sampled was the creation of Soft Cell, but I don't think they get any payment for that sample.

None of the Above

This article deserves no comment, as it should not be news.

However, the poll question deserves comment.

Who comes off as the more responsible parent?
· Britney Spears
· Kevin Federline

If there ever was a poll in need of "None of the Above," this is it. And I venture None of the Above would win over 90% of the vote.
